Fedral Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR)
In September 2009, FANR was established to be the regulatory body for the nuclear sector in the UAE in accordance with Federal Law by Decree No 6 of 2009, Concerning the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, which was issued by the UAE late President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
FANR protects the UAE’s public, the environment and its workers by conducting nuclear regulatory programs in safety, security, radiation protection and safeguards, which fulfil key objectives in licensing and inspection in accordance with best international practices. FANR also oversees the implementation of the UAE’s obligations under the international treaties, conventions and agreements in the nuclear sector, and determines administrative standards, which support excellence in regulation.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field. IAEA works for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
The Agency was set up as the world’s “Atoms for Peace” organization within the United Nations family. Since its inception, it has worked with the UN Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies. For almost six decades, the Agency has been committed to making nuclear science and technology available to its Member States in a safe, secure and peaceful manner.
The Agency’s work is focused on addressing the evolving needs and developmental goals of its Member States such as the UAE. The Nawah Energy Company works in accordance with all guidelines and international best practices identified by the IAEA.
World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO)
The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) unites every company and country in the world that has an operating commercial nuclear power plant to achieve the highest possible standards of nuclear safety. WANO exists purely to help its members reach the top levels of operational safety and reliability. This is achieved through a series of highly regarded programmes, such as peer reviews, access to technical support and a global library of operating experience.
WANO is a non-profit organization and does not advocate for, or on behalf of, the nuclear industry. With safety as the only goal, WANO helps operators communicate effectively and share information openly.
With offices in London and Hong Kong, and regional centers in Moscow, Atlanta, Tokyo and Paris, WANO cuts across political barriers and interests. WANO membership is at a worldwide level. Upon joining, each member is required to affiliate with at least one regional center.
WANO ensures the transfer of operational experience from one member to another through a system of peer reviews. These peer reviews help members compare themselves against standards of excellence through an in-depth, objective review of their operations by an independent team from outside their organization. The result is a direct and straightforward report that highlights strengths and areas for improvement in nuclear safety and plant reliability. Members learn and share worldwide insights on safe and reliable plant operation and thereby improve their own performance. The same principles extend to companies, as well as stations, in the form of the corporate peer review.
Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO)
The Institute for Nuclear Power Operations’ mission is to promote the highest levels of safety and reliability, and to promote excellence, in the operation of commercial nuclear power plants. To achieve this, INPO establishes performance objectives, criteria and guidelines for the nuclear power industry; conducts regular detailed evaluations of nuclear power plants; and provides assistance to help nuclear power plants continually improve their performance.
The Institute is committed to a long-term strategic design that outlines the ways and means by which it will fulfil its mission through 2023. INPO evaluation teams travel to nuclear electric generating facilities to observe operations, analyze processes, observe plant activities, and ask a lot of questions. Importantly for Nawah Energy Company, INPO takes an active role in new plant construction by establishing standards of excellence in construction and deployment.
