Environment and Sustainability

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a critical need for new, clean sources of electricity triggered by a growing population and economy. After evaluating a wide array of energy options, nuclear energy emerged as the right choice to deliver the needed baseload electricity with nearly zero carbon emissions.

During operation, nuclear energy facilities produce no carbon emissions. More than one-third of man-made greenhouse gases are caused by burning fossil fuels to generate electricity. Because nuclear energy facilities do not burn fossil fuels, they do not emit these gases. The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant saves the UAE up to 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions every year.
