Abu Dhabi, UAE - 21 July 2019: The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) is the Community Sponsor of the Liwa Date Festival 2019. The event is taking place from 17 to 27 July 2019 in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The Festival is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, and organized by the Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee - Abu Dhabi. ENEC’s participation is the result of its ongoing efforts to support the economic and social development of the Al Dhafra region.
Visitors to ENEC’s pavilion have been updated on the latest achievements accomplished at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the first peaceful nuclear energy project in the Arab World. Several interactive displays allow visitors to learn more about ENEC’s efforts to develop the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program.
His Excellency Eng. Mohamed Al Hammadi, Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, said: “The Liwa Date Festival is an interactive platform that attracts organizations and individuals interested in the UAE’s heritage and traditions. Our participation reflects our commitment to preserve and promote Emirati heritage among our youth. Such events contribute to the economic and social development of the Al Dhafra region, where the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is located.”
“We are keen to highlight the importance of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant and promote the advantages of peaceful nuclear energy, while introducing visitors to ENEC’s efforts and role in the development of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program, as we move forward with the safe and quality-led construction and commissioning of the Barakah plant,” concluded H.E. Eng. Al Hammadi.
The development of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is progressing steadily, with Unit 4 more than 82% complete, Unit 3 more than 91% and Unit 2 more than 95%, while the overall construction completion stands at 93%.. Construction of Unit 1 was completed in March 2018, which is now undergoing a comprehensive series of tests in preparation for receipt of the Operating License from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
Once operational, the four units at the Barakah plant will supply up to 25% of the UAE's electricity needs, while preventing the emission of 21 million tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing 3.2 million vehicles from the UAE’s roads.
