Overview
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) was established by decree in December 2009 by the late H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As part of ADQ, one of the region’s largest holding companies, ENEC is responsible for the implementation of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program, which includes:
- Developing and operating the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the UAE’s largest source of electricity today, operating 24/7, carbon-free.
- Collaborating with the Abu Dhabi and Federal governments to align the UAE’s nuclear program with the UAE’s industrial and sustainability goals.
- Developing a skilled local workforce in coordination with UAE educational institutions to support the nuclear energy sector.
- Engaging with the UAE community to raise awareness about the role of nuclear energy in the nation’s energy portfolio and its contribution to the country’s decarbonization efforts.
- Leading the UAE’s international partnerships and investment opportunities with countries and nuclear energy companies globally.
ENEC also serves as the investment arm of the Government of Abu Dhabi, making strategic investments in the nuclear sector, both domestically and internationally.
Our Vision
Powering the growth of the UAE
Our Mission
Ensure a safe and sustainable peaceful nuclear energy program
Our Role
ENEC is now evolving into a global leader in nuclear energy industry, utilizing its significant institutional knowledge and expertise to explore opportunities for the future of nuclear science and technology in the UAE such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and the production of clean molecules. With a proven track record, ENEC is expanding its footprint in civil nuclear development, supporting the global decarbonization agenda and contributing to tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is a cornerstone of the UAE’s clean energy transition and a catalyst for innovation. ENEC is leading the new era of clean energy in the UAE, driving forward decarbonization, energy security, and sustainable economic growth for the Emirates and beyond. ENEC continues to create high-value opportunities for UAE businesses, awarding over AED 24.5 billion in contracts to date, and supporting significant job creation for UAE Nationals.
With 4 units generating abundant clean electricity around the clock, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant currently generates 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs while preventing 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions annually. This is equivalent to removing 4.6 million cars from the roads each year. Reliable and safe, this clean electricity is also accelerating the decarbonization of the UAE’s heavy industries and energy intensive sectors, from oil & gas and aluminum production through to powering data centers and other high-tech facilities.
